Even if you are not familiar with cycling, you will no doubt know who Sir Bradley Wiggins is, or at least recognise the name. After his success of winning the Tour de France and a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, and more recently his attempt to cycle as far as he could in one hour last weekend \u2013 it is hard not to notice this UK sporting hero as he regularly makes front page news.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am pleased to say that, last weekend in the Olympic Velodrome – I was there.\u00a0After some frenetic attempts at booking tickets – which sold out in 6 minutes \u2013 I was thrilled to be the proud owner of my two tickets!<\/p>\n

\"Bradley<\/a>This was to be my first time going to watch an indoor track event, which many people call the \u2018purist\u2019 form of cycling. I had never really contemplated this before, but it was evident that every detail matters.\u00a0Watching one of the preliminary events \u2013 I noticed the bikes were completely stripped of every spare part.\u00a0Not one aspect of a normal bike was present if not needed.\u00a0No brakes, no gears \u2013 just a bike in its most basic form.\u00a0From an engineering perspective \u2013 beautifully simple!<\/p>\n

Eventually Sir\u00a0Bradley took to the Velodrome with a roar from the crowd.\u00a0He was, as you would expect, completely focused on the job in hand.\u00a0Beard shaved, hair cut short he positioned himself on his record breaking bike ready for the starting position.\u00a0Every aspect of planning, preparation and execution was visible to us.\u00a0Countless team technicians made sure each element of his preparation was precise and completed.\u00a0Then he was off \u2013 to cycle his way into the record books one hour later.\u00a0\u00a0\"Olympic<\/a><\/p>\n

It strikes me that track cycling has strong links to how \u2018text book\u2019 projects should be run.\u00a0Some strong Project Definition from the start, careful analysis of the scope and definition of success, followed by incremental changes made as the project starts and proceeds towards a world record breaking success.\u00a0I am sure that there was\u00a0a de-brief and much analysis of Bradley\u2019s performance after the race too \u2013 checking what could be improved and how to save valuable seconds\u00a0for future races.<\/p>\n

Many people could probably make a guess at the steps needed to run a project.\u00a0According to the PWC Global Insight\u00a0Survey\u00a02012,\u00a0a survey run across 38 countries and over 30 industries, 86% of projects fail to deliver against their budget, schedule, scope, quality and benefits baseline.<\/p>\n
